Sound
proofing qualities of secondary glazing
City sound, Dealing with noise problems for over 37 years .
Sound Proofing
There are a number of ways to help reduce the noise coming through your
windows.
You might try to draught-proof the surrounds with one of the many products
found at your local DIY store, or perhaps change the existing glass
for double glazing, or even quite simply hang heavy curtains in front
of the windows. And it’s true to say that all of these will help
a little, but unfortunately, the best noise reduction you can expect
to achieve using these methods is around 10%. So be careful not to spend
out a sizeable amount of money only to be disappointed.
Did you know that over 30% of secondary glazing from City Sounds is
installed in windows already double glazed?
Question
Why is secondary glazing so effective at noise reduction?
Answer
Like all good sound proofing – as in a recording studio, for
example – the best results are achieved only where there is
an adequate cavity between the two points of contact. That's why at
City Sound we always try to install our low-profile secondary glazing
with a sufficient cavity from your existing window to ensure maximum
insulation. And, of course, we always take into account the overall
aesthetic effect of our work and materials on your existing decor.
Question
So what kind of noise reduction can I expect from your secondary glazing?
Answer
Well, there are many different kinds of pollution you may experience
– but let's take road traffic noise, for example. If we can
achieve our desired cavity you can expect a reduction of around 70
–80%, and in some cases as high as 90%. In the worse case scenario
where a cavity cannot be achieved or is not desired, a reduction of
at least 50% is almost certain.
(Please note that the above guidelines are based on the installation
of our own product, using our unique methods of work, and with the
incorporation of our specified glass.)
